A cheap policy is no bargain if you only find out what is missing after a bump, breakdown or stolen car. Car insurance in Spain is compulsory at third-party level, but the right policy depends on your car, where you drive and who is named to use it.
Car insurance in Spain: start with the cover
Third-party cover pays for injury or damage you cause to others. It does not pay to repair your own vehicle. Third-party fire and theft adds protection if the car is stolen or damaged by fire, while fully comprehensive cover can include accidental damage to your own car.
Comprehensive is not automatically the best choice. For an older, lower-value vehicle, the excess and policy price may make third-party fire and theft better value. For a newer car, or one you rely on every day, comprehensive cover can offer useful peace of mind.
Check the details that catch people out
The policy wording matters as much as the headline price. Check the excess – the amount you pay towards a claim – and whether windscreen repairs have a separate excess. Also confirm that every regular driver is declared, particularly if your partner, adult child or employee uses the car.
Breakdown assistance is another big one. Ask whether it covers roadside recovery only, transport for passengers, a replacement vehicle, and help if you break down away from home. If you travel between regions or take regular road trips, the area of cover is worth checking too.
Make sure the paperwork matches
Insurers may ask for your NIE, Spanish address, vehicle registration details and driving licence information.
