31 Days’ Notice to Cancel Insurance in Spain

Did you know you need to give 31 days notice to cancel insurance in Spain? Many people only find out when their policy renews, the payment has left their bank account, and they are told it is too late to stop it.

The practical answer is yes: if you do not want an annual policy to renew, tell your insurer in good time. The legal rule for policyholders is generally one month’s notice before the renewal date. Allowing 31 days gives you a safer buffer, particularly where weekends, bank holidays or unclear renewal dates are involved.

Why insurance renewals catch people out

Home, car, health and business insurance policies in Spain often renew automatically each year. That is convenient until your circumstances change, you have found better cover, or the premium has increased.

Insurers should normally give you at least two months’ notice if they plan to change the policy or price. As the policyholder, however, leaving your cancellation until the final few days can mean the renewal is valid and payment is still due.

How to cancel without the stress

Check your policy documents for the renewal date, then send your cancellation request in writing at least 31 days beforehand. Include your full name, policy number, the insured address or vehicle registration where relevant, and a clear statement that you do not wish to renew.

Email is often useful, but keep evidence that it was sent and received. If you speak to the insurer by phone, follow it up in writing. Do not simply cancel the direct debit – that can leave you with an unpaid premium and does not always cancel the policy itself.

There can be exceptions. A policy taken out online or by phone may have a cooling-off period, while cancelling mid-term is different from stopping an annual renewal. If you are replacing compulsory cover, such as motor insurance, make sure the new policy starts before the old one ends.

A quick check can save a costly renewal

Before sending notice, compare the cover as well as the price. A cheaper policy is no help if it removes the protection you need. Compare In Spain can help you understand your options in plain English, so you can switch with confidence and keep more cash in your pocket. Happy Client = Happy Tabby!
